Biography

Dr. Eric Hyun is a fellowship-trained colorectal surgeon with expertise in general and colorectal surgery and a particular interest in benign anorectal conditions, advanced colorectal polyps, and rectal cancer.

He completed his joint MD/PhD at the University of Calgary, followed by General Surgery residency training at Dalhousie University. He then pursued fellowship training in Colorectal Surgery at the University of Manitoba. After several years in community colorectal practice in Nova Scotia, he joined the Department of Surgery at the University of Manitoba in 2020.
His practice focuses on general and colorectal surgery, with particular clinical interest in benign anorectal conditions, advanced colorectal polyps, and rectal cancer.

Dr. Hyun has developed specialized expertise in the management of advanced colorectal polyps — lesions that were historically treated by removing a segment of bowel. Using advanced endoscopic and transanal techniques, including endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), and transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS). He is able to remove many large or complex polyps while preserving the colon and rectum, sparing selected patients a major operation and its associated recovery.
