Biography

Dr. K. Alok Pathak, Head and Neck Surgical Oncologist, is a fellowship-trained specialist with nearly 20 years of clinical practice in Winnipeg. His practice focuses on the surgical management of head and neck cancers, skin cancers, thyroid and parathyroid disease, and salivary gland neoplasms.

He is a Professor of Surgery at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba, and an affiliate scientist with the CancerCare Manitoba Research Institute.  His contributions to surgical education and oncology were recognized with the University of Manitoba’s Surgical Educator of the Year award (2017) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s Prix d’Excellence, Specialist of the Year (2015). He is certified by the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada in General Surgery and General Surgical Oncology. He is the Founder and Medical Director of Vitalis Comprehensive Healthcare and Vitalis Surgical Centre, a purpose-built ambulatory facility created to give patients coordinated, timely access to the kind of surgical care that too often gets delayed inside a larger system built for different priorities.

Research

Dr. Pathak’s research focuses on head and neck cancers, particularly of the thyroid, skin cancers and oral cavity, spanning clinical outcomes and translational research — including a widely used prognostic nomogram for head and neck cancer. His current research interests include AI modelling, preoperative 3D modelling for reconstruction planning, minimally invasive and function-preserving head and neck surgery, and mandible-preserving alternatives for oral cancer. He has published more than 140 peer-reviewed papers and abstracts, authored 10 book chapters, and co-edited two volumes of Head and Neck Cancer Clinics. He holds two U.S. patents. Dr. Pathak’s full publication record is available on ResearchGate and PubMed.

Areas of Clinical Focus at Vitalis

Endocrine and Head & Neck Surgery Dr. Pathak provides surgical care for benign and malignant thyroid and parathyroid disease, including minimally invasive parathyroidectomy and thyroidectomy. Through Vitalis, he also offers radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of benign thyroid nodules — a non-surgical alternative to thyroidectomy for appropriately selected patients, and the first program of its kind in Manitoba.

Skin Cancer Surgery Dr. Pathak performs surgical excision for basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma, including wide local excision and management of recurrent lesions. Drawing on his background in head and neck reconstruction, he pays particular attention to closure and cosmetic outcome for lesions on the face, scalp, and other visible or functionally sensitive areas.

Lump and Bump Clinic

The clinic is designed for rapid diagnosis and treatment of lumps and bumps. Most lumps under the skin are benign — lipomas, cysts, and similar but sometimes they need a tissue diagnosis to be certain what they are.
